Referee Signals

Boarding

๐Ÿ’ Striking the clenched fist of one hand into the open palm of the opposite hand in front of the chest.

  • Where a player checks or pushes a defenseless or unsuspecting opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously.

Bodychecking

๐Ÿ’ Open palm of the non-whistle hand, with fingers together, comes across body on to the opposite shoulder.

  • An attempt by a player to gain an advantage on the opponent with the deliberate use of the body. Body-checking results when a player makes deliberate contact with an opposing player with opposite-directional force, when a player leaves their skating lane to make contact, or when a player extends an arm, shoulder, or hip to maximize physical contact after angling an opponent.

Butt-Ending

๐Ÿ’ A cross motion of the forearms, one moving under the other arm.

  • Any action where a player uses or attempts to use the shaft of their stick, above the upper hand, to check or jab an opponent.

Charging

๐Ÿ’ Rotating clenched fists around one another in front of the chest.

  • A player who jumps to check an opponent, builds up speed by taking two or more strides immediately prior to making contact, travels an excessive distance with the sole purpose of delivering such a hit, violently and unnecessarily checks an opponent in any manner, or delivers a body check to an opponentโ€™s blind side.

Checking From Behind

๐Ÿ’ A forward motion of both arms, with the palms of the hands open and facing away from the body, fully extended from the chest at shoulder level.

  • Any action where a player is pushed, body-checked, high-sticked, cross-checked, or hit in any manner from behind.

Cross-checking

๐Ÿ’ A forward and backward motion of the arms with both fists clenched, extending from the chest for a distance of about one foot.

  • Any action where a player uses the shaft of the stick, between the two hands, to check an opponent.

Delayed Off-side

๐Ÿ’ Non-whistle arm fully extended above the head. To nullify a delayed off-side the Linesperson shall drop the arm to the side.

  • A situation where an attacking player(s) has preceded the puck across the attacking blue-line, but have not yet played or attempted to play the puck, and the defending team can bring the puck out of the zone without delay or contact by an attacking player.

Delayed Calling Penalty

๐Ÿ’ Extending the non-whistle arm fully above the head.

  • Where a Referee has raised their arm to indicate a team will be penalized but is waiting for the offending team to gain possession and control of the puck before stopping play.

Goal Scored

๐Ÿ’ A single point directed at the goal in which the puck legally entered.


Hand Pass

๐Ÿ’ Pushing motion with the open palm.

  • Where a player makes a deliberate attempt to stop, knock down, push, or bat the puck with their hand and a teammate in the neutral or attacking zone gains control of the puck.

Head Contact

๐Ÿ’ Patting flat (open palm) of the non-whistle hand on this side of the head.

  • Any action where a player makes contact with an opposing player’s head.

High Sticking

๐Ÿ’ Holding both fists clenched, one immediately above the other at the height of the forehead.

  • The act of a player carrying their stick or any part of their stick above the normal height of the shoulders.

Holding

๐Ÿ’ Clasping either wrist with the other hand in front of the chest.

  • Any action by a player that restrains an opposing player, thereby impeding their progress whether or not they are in possession of the puck, or their ability to pass, shoot, receive, or otherwise propel the puck.

Hooking

๐Ÿ’ A tugging motion with both arms as if pulling something from in front toward the stomach.

  • Any action of using the blade of the stick in a โ€œpulling or tuggingโ€ motion to impede the progress of an opponent.

Icing The Puck

๐Ÿ’ The back Referee or Linesperson signals a possible icing by fully extending either arm over their head. The arm should remain raised until the front Referee or Linesperson, either blows the whistle to indicate an icing or until the icing is washed out. Once the icing has been completed, the back Referee or Linesperson will then point to the appropriate face-off spot and skate to it.

  • Where a team shoots the puck from behind the centre red line and it travels the full length of the ice, past the goal line, without touching any player.

Interference

๐Ÿ’ Crossing arms stationary in front of the chest.

  • Any action where a player interferes with or impedes the progress of an opponent who is not in possession of the puck, delivers a โ€œlate hitโ€ to an opponent, deliberately knocks a stick out of an opponentโ€™s hand, or prevents an opponent who has lost or dropped their stick from regaining possession of it

Kneeing

๐Ÿ’ Slapping either knee with the palm of the hand, while keeping both skates on the ice.

  • Any action where a player makes contact with an opponent where the knee is the principle point of contact

Match Penalty

๐Ÿ’ Patting flat of the hand on the top of the head.

  • A five-minute time penalty that also results in the offending player being removed from the game.

Misconduct

๐Ÿ’ Both hands on hips.

  • A non-timed penalty that does not result in the offending team playing shorthanded. The offending player will be removed from the ice for a period of 10 minutes of playing time.

Too Many Players

๐Ÿ’ Indication with six fingers (one hand open) in front of the chest.


Roughing

๐Ÿ’ Fist clenched and arm extended out to the front or side of the body.

  • Any action where a player is guilty of unnecessary rough play with an opposing player.

Slashing

๐Ÿ’ A chopping motion with the edge of one hand across the opposite forearm.

  • Any action where a player hits an opponent with a stick while holding the stick with one or both hands.

Spearing

๐Ÿ’ Jabbing motion with both hands thrust out immediately in front of the body and then hands dropped to the side of the body.

  • Any action where a player pokes or attempts to poke an opponent with the toe of the blade of the stick.

Tripping/Clipping/Slew-Footing

๐Ÿ’ Striking the leg with either hand below the knee in a front-to-back motion, keeping both skates on the ice.ย Striking the leg with either hand below the knee in a back-to-front motion, keeping both skates on the ice.

  • Any action where a player places their stick or body in such a way that causes an opposing player to trip or fall.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

๐Ÿ’ Using both hands to form a โ€œTโ€ in front of the chest.


Wash Out

๐Ÿ’ A sweeping sideways motion of both arms across the front of the body at shoulder level with palms down. This signal is used: (a) by the Referee to signal โ€œno goalโ€; (b) by the Linesperson to signal โ€œno icingโ€ and in certain situations โ€œno off-sideโ€.
