If the stick is used against or near an opponent\u2019s hands, the action may be penalized as hooking. However, simple <strong data-start=\"717\" data-end=\"743\">stick-to-stick contact<\/strong> during a legitimate checking action is not considered hooking.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1eywzh0\" data-start=\"846\" data-end=\"881\">\ud83d\udea8 What Does Hooking Look Like?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"883\" data-end=\"925\">A Hooking penalty may occur when a player:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"1308\">\n<li data-section-id=\"9bpgqs\" data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"995\">Uses the blade or shaft of the stick to catch or hook an opponent.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1cls3ha\" data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1065\">Wraps the stick around an opponent&#8217;s body or arm to slow them down.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"11c36h6\" data-start=\"1066\" data-end=\"1126\">Uses the stick to restrict an opponent&#8217;s skating movement.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"wjgov2\" data-start=\"1127\" data-end=\"1206\">Uses the stick around or against the opponent&#8217;s hands to prevent normal play.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1v3vixq\" data-start=\"1207\" data-end=\"1308\">Gains an advantage by using the stick to restrain an opponent rather than legally playing the puck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1481\">The key point is that the stick is being used to <strong data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1394\">restrain or impede the opponent<\/strong>, rather than simply making normal stick contact.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"114kvem\" data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1531\">\ud83c\udfc1 Referee Signal \u2014 How Is Hooking Signaled?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1615\">When a referee calls <strong data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1565\">Hooking (\u0e01\u0e32\u0e23\u0e40\u0e01\u0e35\u0e48\u0e22\u0e27)<\/strong>, the official uses the designated hooking signal.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1617\" data-end=\"1757\">The signal is made by moving one arm in a hooking motion, representing the action of using the hockey stick to hook or restrain an opponent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1759\" data-end=\"1895\">This visual signal allows players, coaches, spectators and other game officials to quickly identify the type of infraction being called.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"unzc7k\" data-start=\"1897\" data-end=\"1923\">\ud83d\udfe8 Penalty for Hooking<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1925\" data-end=\"2233\">Under <strong data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"1947\">IIHF Rule 55<\/strong>, a standard Hooking infraction results in a <strong data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2009\">Minor Penalty (\u0e42\u0e17\u0e29\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e32)<\/strong> when a player impedes an opponent&#8217;s progress by hooking with the stick.
