A charge may occur in open ice, against the boards, or into the goal frame.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"id0zsm\" data-start=\"912\" data-end=\"933\">What Is Charging?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"935\" data-end=\"1065\">Charging is intended to prevent players from generating excessive momentum specifically to deliver a dangerous or unnecessary hit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1067\" data-end=\"1146\">A player may be penalized for Charging when the check involves factors such as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1401\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1i9z3kh\" data-start=\"1148\" data-end=\"1200\">Taking several strides immediately before contact.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"d3vk69\" data-start=\"1201\" data-end=\"1254\">Traveling an excessive distance to deliver the hit.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"3eleq0\" data-start=\"1255\" data-end=\"1300\">Jumping or leaving the ice to make contact.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"hjxkme\" data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1345\">Delivering a violent or unnecessary check.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1fm4l75\" data-start=\"1346\" data-end=\"1401\">Making a check that recklessly endangers an opponent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1403\" data-end=\"1586\">The Referee evaluates the overall circumstances, including the force, violence, distance traveled, and manner in which the contact was delivered.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"11ufa07\" data-start=\"1588\" data-end=\"1624\">Charging vs. Legal Body Checking<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1666\">Not every strong body check is Charging.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1893\">A legal body check can involve significant physical contact when it is delivered within the rules. Charging is generally associated with <strong data-start=\"1805\" data-end=\"1892\">excessive momentum, distance, force, or an unnecessarily violent manner of checking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1895\" data-end=\"2006\">The Referee must assess the circumstances of each play rather than simply judging the intensity of the contact.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"puk6ma\" data-start=\"2008\" data-end=\"2039\">Charging and the Goalkeeper<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2041\" data-end=\"2117\">A goalkeeper is protected from unnecessary contact while in the goal crease.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2554\">Under the IIHF rules, a player who charges a goalkeeper while the goalkeeper is within the goal crease may be penalized. A goalkeeper is <strong data-start=\"2256\" data-end=\"2341\">not automatically considered fair game simply because they are outside the crease<\/strong>.
